Obituary for Amado Calderon Mendoza

Amado Calderon Mendoza was born 13 September, 1920 in Bauang, La Union, Philippines to Carlos and Catalina (Calderon) Mendoza. He passed away at his home in Oak Harbor after a short illness on 28 Feb, 2015.

Amado, at the age of 21, enlisted in the Philippine Army to serve during WWII. He was captured by the Japanese and had the misfortune of being part of the Bataan Death March. Fortunately, Amado survived this ordeal and went on to another 64 years of happiness and loving family. He married Melchora Escritor Gravidez on 31 December 1945 in Bauang, La Union. They were married for 58 years before Melchora passed away on a visit to the Philippines in 2003.

Amado worked at the US Naval Base Subic Bay Special Services where he was a greenskeeper and sedan driver. He was also a member of the Subic Admirals football team, serving as equipment manager for several years and travelling to Japan, Guam and Virginia, USA for football games. After arriving in the US Amado worked for many years at Washington Bulb of Mt Vernon, Wa.

Upon Amado’s retirement he spent much of his time fishing, crabbing and taking care of family. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching basketball, football and baseball.

Amado is survived by his second wife Edita (Peralta) Mendoza Oak Harbor, sister Pacita Dabay Philippines and nine wonderful children, Aurora (Luvi) Penaflor of Milpitas, Ca, Adela (Duane) Blanchette of St Anne Il, Marlina (Gary) Brundidge of Oak Harbor, Marvin (Marcelina) Mendoza of Oak Harbor, Ema (Robin) Hartman of Oak Harbor, Brino (Danami) Mendoza of Oak Harbor, Amado Mendoza Jr of Oak Harbor, Steven (Sharon) Mendoza of Oak Harbor and Cris (Nelson) DeLeon of Oak Harbor. He also has 20 Grandchildren: Neil, Rommel (Cindi), Vermon (Brian) and Hesse Penaflor, Cjristopher (Sindi) Blanchette, Sarah (Chaz) Pangelinan, Jessica Brundidge, Robyn (Nick) Bainbridge, Jay Hartman, Valerie (Andy) Sweet, Andy, Michell N, Brenda and Hannah Mendoza, Michelle Mendoza, Karl, Marcos and Jozef Mendoza and Molly and Isaac DeLeon. He is also survived by 8 Great Grandchildren: Alec and Tate Blanchette, Sebastian and Simon Penaflor, Zander and Reece Bainbridge and Natalie and Ryan Sweet.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Melchora, sisters Visitacion and Christina, brothers Francisco, Guillermo and Lorenzo and GGrandson Jackson Sweet

Viewing will be at Wallin Funeral home on 10 March from 1-7 with services on March 11 at St Augustines Catholic Church at 1100
