Obituary for Sadie Elaine Chambers

1924 - 2017

John and Helga Wappula brought an angel in to this world, Sadie E. Wappula, born 1924 in Middle River, Minnesota, joining 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Sadie attended schools in Middle River, MN. Following graduation from HS, Sadie attended Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Grand Forks, North Dakota;
University of North Dakota; Affiliate in Pediatric Nursing at the Gillette Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Sadie joined the Nurse Cadet Corps and received training at the Army Hospital in Brigham City, Utah and was a graduate and registered nurse from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing on August 31, 1945. When the war was over, the graduates were told to go home as RN’s were no longer needed in the military service. Sadie was on staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, Long Beach, CA and at St. Francis Hospital, Honolulu Hawaii.

Sadie married Richard H Chambers, a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy on February 1948 and life as a Navy family brought them to Whidbey Island in 1956. Sadie worked at Whidbey Island Manor from 1967 to 1973.

Her surviving family includes her three children and spouses: Chip (Linda), Steve, and daughter Sally (Bill) Turner. Surviving grandchildren: Steve, Jeff, Curtis (Cameo), Colby (Eric), Emily (Jared), Carl (Priscilla). Also surviving Sadie are her three great grandchildren.

Sadie is preceded in death by her parents John and Helga Wappula, her husband “Dick” Chambers in 1999 and daughter Patricia Van Doren in 2007. Also preceding her in death are four brothers: John, George, Ray and Bill; plus four sisters: Ellen Kuklinca, Sally Olsen, Ruth Paez and Amelia Eskeli.

Sadie suggested memorials, in her name, be made out to your favorite charity and/or to Cancer Research: PO Box 96206 Washington, DC 20090-6026.

Following a private family interment, a Celebration of Sadie’s Life was held at Wallin Funeral Home, Oak Harbor WA on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 2pm.
