Condolences

Condolence From: Mike Schattel Jr.
Condolence: By far the best CO I ever worked under. A few things stand out when I think of those days. First, all sailors on the Connie knew the last place they wanted to be was standing in front of Captain Bull at Captains Mast :). Second, when the whole crew assembled to hear Captain Bull speak, the entire crew would break out shouting Bull, Bull, Bull. May not sound like much now, but back then it was very cool. Last, when Captain Bull gave his goodbye speech in the hanger bay of the USS Constellation. This big tough man broke down with tears in his eyes. He loved his crew and we felt the same about him.

Condolence: I had the distinct honor of working with then Capt. Bull while attached to ASN RE&S in the Pentagon, from 1985-1987. As a young Marine I was incredibly impressed with Adm Bull's leadership and concern for those he led. Truly an officer and a gentleman Adm Bull encouraged me to "Set my goals high, and "GO" for it". Truly inspirational counsel that I've always kept with me. He was a gift to the men and women who served under him and a hero for his lifetime of service to our nation. An amazing life to be emulated and remembered. May God richly bless his family and receive his soul into Gods Kingdom. I look forward to seeing him again one day.

Condolence: My deepest sympathy to the entire Bull family. I was stationed onboard the USS San Jose and he was the finest CO I ever served under. He allowed my Dad to ride the ship as his guest from Alameda to Hawaii when we changed home ports to Guam and my father never forgot how he was fantastic he was treated during that trip. He spoke about that experience the rest of his life.

Condolence: As a former shipmate who served with Captain Bull both on the USS San Jose (AFS-7) in Alameda and Guam and the USS Constellation in San Diego it is with deepest sympathy that I just heard of his passing. I just went through some old pictures and found a picture from the Change of Command Ceremony In Guam. I was the duty driver that morning and took him from the hotel to the ship and we had a great conversation. Her said he enjoyed me as part of the crew and hoped we would be on the same ship someday again. Less than a year later I was on the Constellation and he saw me in a passageway finding my way around and he immediately greeted me and briefly showed me to my workspace. This despite the numerous crew members onboard an aircraft carrier. Anyway I cherish the memories and he was able to congragulate me on making Chief Petty Officer before he transferred. I saw him once more in passing after he made Admiral. I still remember the great times on the San Jose especially when we first arrived in Guam. He will be missed.

Condolence: I knew Lyle for a short time but once I met him, I felt I had know him all my life.
What a great man. Just knowing he is gone makes me feel sad. His legacy is firm and his time here on Earth speaks for itself.
We need more like him now more than ever.

Condolence: So many Lyle Bull stories...so little space....and all inspirational! Adm Bull was my XO and then CO in VA-196 from 1974 to 1976. He was an amazing example of humanity and leadership rolled up into one giant personality. In June 1976 off the coast of San Diego on USS ENTERPRISE, he called me out of the Ready Room into the adjacent passageway with a solemn "follow me" gesture. My wife was due to deliver our third child any day...so I was concerned. Remember this was before sonograms, cell phones, email, Skype, Facetime, etc. He then broke into the biggest Lyle Bull grin and said..."Do you want a boy or girl?" I said "either one." He handed me the Red Cross telegram announcing the birth of our son. I love that man.

Condolence: We have lost a champion in a supporter and an operator of the A-6 Aircraft! Lyle was always there to help others and take care of people. He was truly a role model for everyone that was around him. As a former Commanding Officer of VA-196, we shared something in common. Lyle's reputation as the Commanding Officer was well known and something I looked up to for guidance. Lyle was always available to discuss the A-6 and his former squadron.
Our sincere sympathy to Diane and the Bull family.

Condolence From: PJ Braun
Condolence: It was my privilege to serve under Captain Bull while the Counseling & Assistance Center Director aboard USS Constellation.

He was a leader-by-example, who both expected & acknowledged professionalism in action by his shipmates... whatever their position in the chain-of-command. He will be missed...
