Obituary for Anita A. Sherrill

Anita “Doc” Sherrill passed away on 03 January 2023, five days before her 81st birthday. Her death was due to Pulmonary Fibrosis most likely caused by being required to teach outside for the DODDS system in Germany while the radioactive cloud passed over her after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in April 1986. Anita earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Minot State University, her Master of Arts from Ball State University, and her Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California. Anita taught for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DODDS) for 30 years; serving in Libya, Spain, and Germany. At the end of her career she was in the main office in Germany and given charge of curriculum for the DODDS system for all of Europe, including assisting in closing numerous schools in the early 1990’s when the USSR fell and many military bases were closed.

After retiring from DODDS Anita moved to Oak Harbor Washington. She taught for the Oak Harbor Public Schools for ten years, then substituted frequently after her second retirement. In 2019 Anita was asked to teach as an adjunct professor in the School of Education at Utah Valley University. She taught several classes each semester for two academic years (2019-2021). After which she retired for the third, and last time. Anita loved to travel. She loved Mark Twain’s quote, “Travel is fatal to prejudice.” Anita travelled throughout Europe, as well as around the world five times. She had friends throughout the world, enjoying communicating and traveling with them, hosting them at her home, and visiting them at their homes. In addition to travel, Anita enjoyed Volksmarching. She actively participated in Volksmarches throughout Europe. When she moved back to the United States she continued to participate in Volksmarches throughout the U.S. as well as travelled internationally to Volksmarch overseas.

Anita completed over 50 marathons, including walking across Denmark seven times. Anita was an active member of the Tulip Trekkers while living in Oak Harbor, Washington. Additionally, Anita loved to garden. She actively participated in the Oak Harbor Garden Club. During daylight hours she spent many more hours outside than she ever did inside her home. Anita was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Anita was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Janine, as well as her brother, Robbie. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa of Fernley, Nevada, her son, Cary, of Oak Harbor, Washington, and her brother, Jerry, of Visalia, California.
