Obituary for John Alfonse Moon

Long term resident, John Alfonse Moon, passed away peacefully in his home on March 30, 2023. One day shy of his 95th birthday.
John was born to Jonathan and Electra Moon on March 31, 1928, in Pueblo, Colorado. He grew up learning how to shoot marbles, roller skating and had a paper-route.

At the age of 16, John left Pueblo and drove to San Francisco and enlisted in the Merchant Marines for service in WWII. While serving, John taught himself how to play the accordion and earned his private pilot’s license. In 1947 John left the Merchant Marines and joined the United States Navy. A career the lasted 20 years and 1 day. During that time John married Virginia and together they raised five children.

Upon retirement from the Navy, John moved his family back to Whidbey Island. John worked for Western Farmers in Oak harbor, WA before opening his own business, the “Hole-bit Tak Rak” which he operated for 25 years, all the while running his own cattle, haying, farming, finding time to build houses, volunteering for the fire department, Coupeville arts and crafts festival, scouting, 4-H, pony club and enjoying the many dogs he had over the years. John still enjoyed camping, traveling, skiing, beach watchers, Whidbey Playhouse, eating ice cream and people watching, amongst other things.

Several years after Virginia’s passing in 1997 John married Wendy. Together they continued John’s passion for community involvement and travelled until Wendy’s passing in 2016.
John was a true member of the greatest generation and it was said of him that “he never knew a stranger” He lived a fulfilling life as a son, husband, father and friend.
John was dearly loved by all who knew him and was grateful for the care he received from his hospice team and his many caregivers. He always had a twinkle in his eye and special smile for all. He will be greatly missed.

Graveside services are going to be held Tuesday April 18, 2023 at 1:00pm, Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville, WA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the VFW.
