Obituary for Marjorie Jean (Olts) Cole
Marjorie (Marge to her friends) was born in Ketchikan Alaska on July 12, 1928. She passed away on March 10 in Oak Harbor at the age of 92.
Her family moved around quite a bit during the Depression, living in Forks, Puyallup, and eventually Seattle. Marjorie graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended the University of Washington where she met her future husband, Ralph Cole. They were married in 1948 and the family grew during the 1950s.
Scott, now retired from a pharmaceutical company, Martin, now retired from a power plant, and Janice, who is still working at an oil company, all were born by 1959.
The family moved to Southern California in 1964 and Marge took a job as a teacher’s aide in a school serving immigrant children. When she and Ralph retired, they moved to Coupeville, Wash., where they spent their retirement years. Marjorie loved the beauty of Whidbey Island and would go to many festivals as well as to the quiet beach.
Marjorie and Ralph were both active in the Coupeville Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women.
Marjorie loved to cook and have family over for dinners. One could always count on fresh blackberry cobbler in the summer. She cooked family favorites and often tried new recipes.
Marge loved to travel and go camping. The family would usually go camping every summer with family friends.
Marjorie had great inner strength and self-reliance, which she learned by going through the Great Depression. She was a child when she watched her father and friends move a house down a hill to the lot they had purchased.
Marge was the sole caregiver for Ralph as Alzheimer’s slowly overwhelmed him until she could no longer care for him. He was moved to a care facility where he passed away after only a few months.
As Marjorie got older, she moved to Regency assisted living. The family would meet her for lunch or bring her to her house for dinner. She loved being with family.
Marjorie is survived by children Scott, Martin and Janice; grandchildren Martin Jr., Brandy, Resa and Krystie; and great grandchildren Lucas, Anthony and Zachary.
