Obituary for Ronald Thompson

MCPO Ronald G. Thompson, USN, Retired

Ron Thompson, age 87, passed away in his sleep on July 4, 2022.

Ron was born in Santa Monica, CA in April 1935. He enlisted in the Navy on May 13, 1952, in St. Louis during the Korean War. His specialty was aircraft maintenance (air frames), primarily the all-weather aircraft carrier-based A-6 Intruders. He made several deployments during the Vietnam War and afterwards, retiring from active duty on January 31, 1984, in Oak Harbor, WA.

Ron also worked for Grumman Technical Services in China Lake, CA as a A-6 air frames field representative from 1986 to 1994. He enjoyed meeting fellow service members at the Fleet Reserve in Oak Harbor, WA for a beer during his retirement. He also enjoyed driving his Cadillac around town and on road trips. He loved the Navy, and he loved talking about it!

Ron was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara (mother of his children) and his second wife Akiko. He is survived by his son LCDR Ronald G. Thompson Jr., USN, Retired and daughter-in-law Susie of Simpsonville, SC, daughter Terri Deffenbaugh and son-in-law David of Chesapeake, VA, and daughter Tina Offerjost and son-in-law Mike of Stafford, VA, and four grandchildren (Eliza Thompson, Steven McCrea, Nicholas Offerjost, and Meredith Offerjost).

A graveside interment service will be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Fleet Reserve Association (https://www.fra.org/fra/web/).
