Obituary for Steven Barrett Smith

Steven Barrett Smith, of Coupeville, Washington peacefully passed away on February 3rd, 2022. He was surrounded by his wife, sons, and daughter after a brief battle with multiple myeloma.

Steve was born March 29, 1943, in Coupeville to Knight and Roberta Smith. He was the second of three children. He attended Coupeville High School and played football and track and forged lifelong friendships in town. He then went on to Skagit Valley College and ran track, Wenatchee Valley College and finally Central University where he played on the football team as fullback. During his first year at Central he was drafted into the Army and stationed at Fort Bragg and studied to be a medical corpsman. Between 1966-1968 he served in Vietnam and later stationed at Ft. Lewis. He was awarded the bronze star and a purple heart while performing his duties as an Army medic.

In 1968 Steve and Sandi were married in Seattle and moved back to Ebey’s prairie after he was discharged. Shortly after he returned, his father Knight Smith died and left the farming to Steve and his brother Bill. They farmed into the late seventies until the Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve was established. Steve continued to farm the land alone for about three years then went into landscaping until he retired.

Steve was a member of the Island County Posse where he enjoyed roping, occasional steer wrestling and later did horseback trail riding and camping. He was involved with coaching youth sports when his kids were young and enjoyed watching Coupeville Wolves compete in basketball, football, volleyball, and track. He enjoyed visiting and attending bible studies and fellowshipping with his Christian friends. Steve was well known for his friendly disposition and enjoyed the company of anyone that wanted to talk. He could show up at your door for a visit or was always prepared to entertain company that showed up at his.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents Knight and Roberta Smith, and younger brother Rex. He is survived by brother Karl “Bill” Smith; Steve’s wife Sandi, sons Jesse (Diane), Todd (Teresa), daughter Joli, grandchildren Jessica (Curt), David, Darian, Emma, Savannah, Gavin, Brooklyn, Anthony, Austin, Logan, Bailey, great grandchildren Hadley, Harper, and Rozalynn.

A graveside service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville, Washington.
