Obituary for Walter "Walt" DeLashmutt

Walter “Walt” De Lashmutt died on January 23, 2023. He was 95 years old. He was born the 8th of ten children at Caldwell, Idaho, on January 18, 1928, to George E. and Loretta De Lashmutt.
La Grande, OR became his home soon after birth, through high school, until February 1946, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, having archived the rank Master Sergeant Corps of Engineers. In August of 1971, he retired from active duty and returned to La Grande, OR. He had served in Germany, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, in Alaska and other states.
While stationed in the Presidio his rank was commissioned Sgt. First Class. Also, he was awarded The Soldier’s Medal for distinguishing himself by exceptional gallantry while serving in Vietnam. A U.S. Air Force O-1 F aircraft crashed on tak-off. De Lashmutt grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher, and with quick thinking, and complete disregard for his own safety, rescued the pilot.
In addition to the Soldier’s Medal, he had received the Army Commendation Medal, Air Medial, Good Conduct, Medal, and numerous overseas ribbons.
During his career, he was assigned as administration NCO with the United Nations Command POW camp, Korea, Administrative NCO, 8th U.S. Army Aviation Office.
In 1951 he married Margaret Logan and they had three children: Walter, Mary, and George. In 1962 they divorced. In November 1981, MSG Walter E. De Lashmutt married Alice Jean Moore from Summerville, OR. Both enjoyed square and round dancing and traveling in their 5th wheel. The Ham radio, computers and other technology became his main interest. Their lovely retirement home is in Oak Harbor, WA.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents and son George De Lashmutt; siblings: George, Joseph, Claude, David, William, Daniel, Mary Lou De Lashmutt, and Lois Rogers. He is survived by his wife Alice Jean, sister Lora Jane, and brother-in-law Robert Welk; son Walter H. De Lashmutt, daughters Mary Fernandez, Deborah Dyche (Scott) as well as grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews.
