Obituary for William Alfred "Bill" Meche

William Alfred "Bill" Meche of Oak Harbor, WA died on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

Bill was born on August 2, 1940, in Pine Bluff, AR. After graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 1958, he began a career with the US Navy, retiring after 21 years served. During his active duty, he and his family lived in Tennessee, Guam and Hanford, CA. After active duty, Bill continued to serve in the Reserves and worked as a civil servant at NAS Whidbey as an electronics technician until his retirement in 2000. Bill loved Jesus and was greatly admired in his church and community, making the biggest impact doing what came most naturally to him - making people feel welcomed and seen. He enjoyed creating family memories with camping trips, vacations to Whistler, BC, and playing favorite family games of dominoes ("Just give me a hundred!") and Murder ("Fives are easy!"). He was also a passionate sports fan, having been a star basketball player in high school and later taking on roles as a Little League softball coach as well as high school girls basketball referee (and legendary Assigning Secretary). Bill was a loyal fan to all the local sports teams - high school, college and professional - but was always happiest when cheering on his grandchildren's teams.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Richie, of 62 years; his daughters, Terri Meche and Stephanie Cone (Ray); his five grandchildren; his seven great-grandchildren; and his brother, Lyn. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Meche; brother, Kenim Meche and parents, Fred and Nita Meche. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service in honor of Bill at Wallin-Stucky Funeral Home, 1811 NE 16th Ave, Oak Harbor, WA on Friday, October 13, 2023 at 1pm. Memorials can be made in lieu of flowers by donating to The Navigators at navigators.org.
