My favorite Rollo story is the time he and Sylvia came down to San Luis Obispo from Washington to babysit while Loren and Melanie were on a trip for a wedding anniversary. I don't recall the time of year - maybe fall. Anyway, it was a pretty warm day for us, maybe in the lower 80's. Most homes in San Luis don't have air conditioning as really warm days used to be uncommon. So there we were one early evening after a warm day. The air was pretty still so no circulation to bring cooler air into the house. Rollo, Sylvia and I sat at the dining room table drinking wine and talking about our lives. There was one little fan that I'd brought over to push the air around. We got more philosophical as the hours turned over and the topics changed from wine to schooling to raising children to religion (isn't that the same as wine?) It was a memorable time especially because it was maybe 73 degrees but it seemed so hot for the Whidbey Island duo! I'll miss Rollo - he was a character and a treasure. Slainte!
