Obituary for Edith Ramona Goodman

Edith Ramona Goodman
Edith R. Goodman passed away on January 26, 2016 in Anacortes, WA. She was 84 years of age. Edith was born on March 8, 1931 in Blandville, West Virginia to Claude and Clethia (Lowther) Ross. She was raised in Blandville and graduated from Doddridge County High School.

After graduation, she worked as a cashier in a café in Parkersburg, WV. During this time, she took a Civil Service test and was hired as a clerk typist with the US Navy in the Department of Budget at the Annex in Virginia. While living in the District of Columbia, she met and married a young Navy man, Harold Goodman, who was stationed at Anacostic, D.C.

The military transferred them to many locations. Oldest son, Tom was born in Bethesda, Maryland, daughter, Mona, Memphis and son Fred and daughter Jeannette in Millington, TN. While in Memphis Edith joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association, where she held the office of Secretary.

In 1960, Harold was transferred to Whidbey Island and Edith thought they had reached the end of the world. But Whidbey worked its magic and she was to remain on the Island for the rest of her life. In 1970 she was began work at the Navy Exchange in the maintenance department, retiring in 1993.

Edith enjoyed cooking for her family, knitting, and reading. What she enjoyed most, other than her family was “doing charity work for community and mankind. That’s what life is all about.” She was a member of Eastern Star, but where she volunteered most of her time was with the Oak Harbor Emblem Club #450. Joining as a member of the Emblem Club in 1970, Edith served as Corresponding Secretary, Press Correspondent, Ways and Means, and Club President in 1976-77. Her club motto was “Let’s Keep it Moving” and she went on record as having some of the shortest meetings in the Club’s history. Edith was also a member of the State Ways and Means Committee, served as Supreme District Deputy, and as State Convention Chairman from 1984-86.

Edith is survived by her children Harold “Tom” (Judy) Goodman of Naples, Italy; Ramona “Mona” (Jim) Kadow of Oxford, PA; Fredrick (Julia) Goodman of Oak Harbor; and Jeannette (Roy) Lindsay of Sedro Woolley, WA. Also surviving are 9 Grandchildren and 9 Great-Grandchildren and siblings Vonda Williamson and Ronzal Ross. Preceding her in death were her husband, Harold and her parents.

A memorial service for Edith was held on Monday, February 1 at 11:00 am at Wallin Funeral Home with Gary Wallin, Certified Life Celebrant presiding. Inurnment was held a Maple Leaf Cemetery, where she was placed beside her husband Harold. A reception followed at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge.
